The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam recently received an exceptionally well-preserved 17th-century drawing book as a donation from the prominent Van Eeghen family in the Netherlands, the museum announced. The book, which has been in the safekeeping of the Van Eeghen family for more than three centuries, contains approximately thirty drawings, many of which depict biblical scenes. The book is the work of the artist Rombout van Uylenburgh, a Dutch painter who became an artist for King Sigismund III Vasa at the Polish royal court in Krakow; he later settled in the port city of Danzig. Well-known during his lifetime as a painter of grisailles, van Uylenburgh fell into obscurity after his death, which took place around 1627. Van Uylenburgh’s brother Hendrick was an art dealer who later became the business partner of Rembrandt. Furthering the family connection to the Dutch master, van Uylenburgh’s niece, Saskia van Uylenburgh, went on to marry Rembrandt in 1634. The Van Eeghen Drawing Book was only attributed to van Uylenburgh around two decades ago, when its provenance was traced back to the artist’s workshop by C.P. van Eeghen in 2013. Many of the drawings have been done on blue paper, and because the book has rarely been exposed to light, its colors remain remarkable. “The Van Eeghen Drawing Book is a highlight of Dutch draughtsmanship,” Taco Dibbits, the general director of the Rijksmuseum, said. “The donation enables the Rijksmuseum to introduce everyone to Rombout Uylenburgh, a fascinating artist of whom very little work has survived. We are extremely grateful to the Van Eeghen family for this generous gift, which is in keeping with a long-standing family tradition.” The Van Eeghen Drawing Book can now be seen at the Rijksmuseum, where it will be on display until November 29.
